About the Scheme

Brief
The Khelo India Scheme is a flagship Central Sector Scheme launched by the Government of India in 2018 to revive sports culture at the grassroots level and establish India as a major sporting nation.

Objectives
- Encouraging sports at the grassroots level (schools/colleges)
- Nurturing young talent through sports academies (SAI centers)
- Building and upgrading sports infrastructure in districts, tehsils, and states
- Aligning sports with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for holistic student development
- Engaging youth in deprived/disturbed areas through sports

Eligibility Criteria
- Primarily targets youth under the Under-17 and Under-21 categories
- Athletes must generally participate in School Games Federation of India (SGFI) national games or National Sports Federation (NSF) competitions
- The High-Powered Committee selects the most deserving athletes for scholarships
- For University games, candidates must be enrolled students

Benefits
- Scholarship Scheme: Talented players receive a financial assistance of INR 5 Lakh per annum for eight consecutive years
- Out of Pocket Allowance (OPA): Identified Khelo India Athletes (KIAs) receive an additional Rs. 10,000 per month
- Training & Mentorship: Access to top-tier sports academies (SAI Training Centres, NCOEs, KISCEs)
- Platform for Talent: Participation in the annual Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), University Games (KIUG), and Winter/Para Games
