About the Scheme
Brief
The National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) is a Central Sector Scheme designed to assist low-income students from marginalized communities in India to pursue higher education, specifically Master's and Ph.D. programs, at top-ranked universities abroad.
Objectives
The scheme aims to enhance the social and economic standing of students from underprivileged backgrounds, including Scheduled Castes and Denotified Nomadic Tribes, by enabling access to quality higher education.
Eligibility Criteria
1. Target Group: Applicants must belong to SC, DNT, Landless Agricultural Labourers, or Traditional Artisans.
2. Academics & Age: Minimum 60% in the qualifying degree; applicants must be 35 years or younger.
3. Financial Limit: Total annual family income must not exceed ₹8.00 Lakh.
4. Admission: Candidates must have an unconditional offer from a top 500 QS-ranked university.
5. Limits: Maximum of 30% of the 125 annual awards are for female applicants.
Benefits
The scholarship provides comprehensive funding, typically disbursed through Indian Missions abroad:
1. Tuition Fees: Actual fees as charged by the institution.
2. Maintenance Allowance: Approximately USD 15,400 per year (for the USA and other countries) or GBP 9,900 (for the UK).
3. Contingency Allowance: For books and research expenses (approx. USD 1,500/GBP 1,100 annually).
4. Airfare: One-time economy class return air passage.
5. Other Allowances: Includes visa fees, medical insurance premiums, and incidental journey/equipment allowances
