About the Scheme

Brief
Launched in 1950, CTS is the backbone of India's national vocational training system. It provides long-term institutional training in various engineering and non-engineering trades, leading to a National Trade Certificate (NTC) issued by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET).

Objective
- Ensure a consistent flow of skilled workers for domestic industries
- Raise the quality and quantity of industrial production through systematic training
- Equip educated youth with employable skills for wage or self-employment
- Cultivate a technical and industrial attitude in the younger generation

Eligibility Criteria
- Minimum age 14 years as of the first day of the academic session
- Varies by trade, education ranging from 8th pass, 10th pass, to 12th pass
- Selection for admission is strictly on a merit basis
- A minimum of 80% attendance is mandatory to appear for final examinations

Benefits
- Recognized Certification: Award of the NTC, which is globally recognized and valid for government/private recruitment
- Stipends/Scholarships: Many states provide monthly stipends (e.g., up to ₹8 lakh family income limit in Maharashtra)
- Fee Exemptions: Girl candidates are often exempted from tuition and examination fees at National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs)
- Pathways: Graduates can pursue lateral entry into polytechnic diplomas or the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS)
